Recovery
Sunday after running a fantastic race and setting a new half-marathon PR it was time to relax and recover. I had some food and a few glasses of wine with my fellow racing friends, then headed home, chatting with Kristina as I drove in the sunshine.
Once home Daisy and I headed out for a walk, my muscles tired but not yet sore from the morning’s race. After a mile we were back at the house and I climbed into the shower, washing away the gritty residue of sweat and mud.
Stepping out of the shower the exhaustion suddenly hit me full force. I knew I was tired, having gotten only five hours of sleep the night before, combined with running an intense race, combined with several glasses of wine while sitting in the sun, but suddenly I could barely keep my eyes open. I crawled under the sheets and took my favorite kind of nap – a post-run, post-shower, naked nap.
Two and a half hours later I reluctantly crawled out of bed, pulled on some clothes and took Daisy for a walk. Shortly thereafter the Pilot called me and we confirmed our plans for that night: he’d come over with dinner and a movie, and there was talk of a rubdown.
Later that evening we sat eating and he listened eagerly as I recapped my race, still high on the excitement of my performance. After eating and walking Daisy (yes, yes, I know my dog gets walked a lot, but really, she needs it, she’s very high energy!) we curled up on the couch and watched Seven Pounds with Will Smith (good movie, if a little predictable).
Once the movie was over I was treated to a full body massage, my muscles needing the kneading. Shortly thereafter, with him lying beside me, I fell fast asleep, my body and mind tired from the day, but fantastically happy and satisfied as well.

It sounds like a pretty much perfect day.
My favourite naps are on weekend mornings. I get up early, pee, eat breakfast and then head back to bed, it’s like instant sleep and it’s the best sleep ever.
