Word Perv

The Life and Shenanigans of Courtney Birst

The Elusive Book Deal

Well dear friends, it would appear the elusive book deal I mentioned so many months ago has indeed fallen through. :( I am incredibly saddened by this because as you all know I’d love to make enough money from my writing to allow me to one day quit working for THE MAN. Not that this book was going to allow me to do that, but it was a step in the right direction. But my publisher is MIA and has been for many months, which unfortunately leads me to the sad conclusion that he is no longer interested in publishing my work.

*sad sigh*

And so, since there won’t be any book by yours truly any time soon, here are a couple of new poems. Enjoy.

Morning Revelation
Eyes tired and
head heavy
from the bottle of red
I emptied last night.
Edges blurry and
boundaries wavering
when your hands
are touching me.
Caution thrown and
judgment left behind
with scattered clothing.
Knowing this might
hurt in the end,
knowing I’m a teary-eyed girl
all too often.
Knowing this and still
wanting nothing more
than your skin
touching mine.

Breaking
The words came falling out,
raining down
like tiny pebbles,
creating a tiny fracture,
a small tear,
a hairline crack.
But those pebbles of words
held more weight than we realized
and that tiny fracture
gave way,
tearing free and breaking off.
Then more words,
quick and fast to fix the damage.
Tears drying like glue,
sealing the wound.
Arms wound round to hold it all in,
both of us wondering if we -
the we that is undefined -
would recover,
or if this would be the straw,
breaking the camel’s back.

In That Moment
You were stretched out,
warm skin naked,
sleeping.
I curled up beside you,
wrapped my arms
around you, whispered,
“I’m falling for you,”
into your dreaming ears.
You stirred,
pushed against me,
curved toward me.
I gave in, gave up.
You may hurt me
in the end,
but in that moment
you were mine.
