A Poem by Billy Collins

It’s not plagiarizing if I give him full credit, right? Let’s hope so! This is a new poem by Billy Collins. I love how it uses common phrases and sayings, simply genius. So read it and consider it your poetry lesson for the day!
Adage by Billy Collins When it’s late at night and branches are banging against the windows, you might think that love is just a matter . of leaping out of the frying pan of yourself into the fire of someone else, but it’s a little more complicated than that. . It’s more like trading the two birds who might be hiding in that bush for the one you are not holding in your hand. . A wise man once said that love was like forcing a horse to drink but then everyone stopping thinking of him as wise. . Let us be clear about something. Love is not as simple as getting up on the wrong side of the bed wearing the emperor’s clothes. . No, it’s more like the way the pen feels after it has defeated the sword. It’s a little like the penny saved or the nine dropped stitches. . You look at me through the halo of the last candle and tell me love is an ill wind that has no turning, a road that blows no good, . but I am here to remind you, as our shadows tremble on the walls, that love is the early bird who is better late than never. So as to not steal, this was printed in the most recent issue of Poets & Writer’s Mag. (Thanks lawya for leaving the comment. I still violated the copyright law by not getting his permission, but this is as good as I can do!)

Plagiarizing is claiming another’s work as your own. (You’re clear.)
Copyright infringement is using another’s copyrighted work without obtaining permission. (You got a big, fat red X for this one.)
Luckily for you, Billy is pretty liberal regarding letting people reprint his poems w/o permission.
You found it in this month’s issue of Poets & Writers; right? That’s an excellent article on Billy.
I have recommended you as a “BloggerTo Read” as a part of BlogDay 2008! Check out today’s post for details! http://onewandering.wordpress.com/2008/08/31/blog-day-2008/
My grad school teachers LOVED Billy Collins. I read his poems every day in that class.
WOW! Straight forward, isn’t he…
I just love Billy Collins. So down-to-earth. So you and me. So clever yet so accessible. Adage is another one of this greats. I love Marginalia too. I just wrote a blog entry about him and Marginalia this week. I’d love if you come by and check it out. Thanks. –heidi
