The Life and Shenanigans of Courtney Birst

It’s His *Ahem* Member…

It bloomed in Jen’s garden for the first time last spring. This year, I was fortunate enough to capture it on camera:

It’s called a Dracunculus Vulgaris (I swear, I am not making up the name!) and not only does it have a unique appearance, but it also has a unique smell. It smells like rotting garbage you see. For 2-3 days each spring, once he has shown the world how proud and manly he is, he emits the foulest of odors to attract the flies required to pollinate him.

Jen told me she bought it for the simple fact that it sounded bad. I was very amused with this explanation because really, who wouldn’t want a plant with such a funny name, a funny appearance, and a funny smell?! Thank goodness her affinity for such things is limited to plants and doesn’t carry over in her preference in men. Otherwise I’d have to sit her down and give her a stern talking to. Because this is what friends do - they save you from yourself.

  1. Best. Plant. Ever.

It doesn’t even look REAL, it’s so obnoxious! :p

  2. HAHAHAHA Yeah, I guess I do need help…

Dracunculus vulgaris just sounded so… dirty! Best yet, I was plant shopping through the Breck’s catalog with Mom at the time. Note: This is also the woman who just purchased some Cockscomb for my front flower bed. Gotta love my Mom! ;)

And by the way, since I was dog-sitting I missed my plant in all his um, GLORY. *giggle* So, if you wouldn’t mind sending me the photo on the right? verymuchappreciatedyouknow!

BTW, if you have stamen envy from here on out, that’s totally understandable…

  3. That plant is hilarious! I’ve never heard of anything like it… smells like garbage?? Amazing. Although probably slightly gross at the same time :)
